These days, the news has been pretty negative, so we thought we would focus on an area of the markets where there have been positive developments; gold shares. Below is a chart of the AMEX Gold Index, which is quoted under the symbol HUI.

In a speech in Toronto last week, former Fed Chairman Paul Volcker discussed the world’s economic and banking system woes. In our opinion, Mr. Volcker’s insights are a must-read, especially in the current environment.

European Union GDP was down an estimated 5.9% annual rate in the fourth quarter of 2008. Japan’s GDP shrank at an annualized rate of 12.7% during the same quarter according to their announcement yesterday.
