THINGS ARE A LOT COMPLICATED THAN THEY SEEM

One of the purposes of these pages is to give information in an understandable way to those who are not burdened with a PhD in economics or financial engineering.  Those benighted souls will have to deal with their disabilities on their own.  We try to make complex facts, concepts and ideas simple and reasonably understandable.

There is a great deal of depth we could provide on the subjects about which we write.  In our view, few would be willing to wade through the verbiage, even if they had the interest in understanding the details, hence our interest in simplicity . . .

AS WE EXPECTED, THE WORLD STOCK MARKETS BEGAN A SUBSTANTIAL RALLY

It should continue for at least another few weeks, possibly for a few months.  It is typical of major bear markets to have major rallies.  Initially, we chose to participate in this rally by buying some of the heavily shorted stocks in the financial area, we have been quick to take profits after these rose.   More recently, we have been buying more oil and gold shares on dips, and have purchased some technology companies that are selling at very low valuations versus their growth rates.  We also view the technology purchases as short term.  We view the oil and . . .

SEEING THE HANDWRITING ON THE WALL, THE U.S. GOES FOR QUANTITATIVE EASING

China  has been the biggest buyer of U.S. Treasury securities due to their large trade surplus with the United States.  Now, Chinese officials have made it clear that they will not be buying as many U.S. Treasury bonds, agency bonds, and government securities of other nations, due to the fact that their trade surplus with the rest of the world is falling and their huge foreign exchange reserves have stopped growing rapidly.

OIL PRICES

Each year, we talk to many informed sources about oil and we attend many oil and energy conferences.  As a result of extensive research, we believe that oil prices have seen their low for 2009.

Some readers may be saying to themselves “how is this possible?”  The world economy is in a serious recession.  Major countries, such as the U.S., all major European countries, and many others are in what many observers are starting to call a depression.  The few growing countries like China and India are not growing fast enough to support the rest of the world.  How . . .
